Becoming like clay
On International Yoga Day we are trying something different. We are taking the attention that yoga builds and bringing it to a piece of clay.
Clay asks the same things of you that the breath does. It responds to pressure, it holds what you give it, and it asks you to slow down and pay attention with your hands. To work with it well, you have to become a little like it. Soft enough to be moved, present enough to feel what is happening, willing to let a shape emerge rather than forcing it.
That is the idea behind the afternoon. We use yoga as a set of tools to settle the body and quiet the mind, and then we channel the same openness into creating with our hands. Karthikeyan leads the yoga and Daria leads the clay, and through the afternoon the two practices feed each other.
Movement, clay, stillness, and back again
We begin with gentle movement to wake up the body, then move to the table for a first turn with the clay. From there we move between the two. A little yoga, a meditative or visualisation practice to settle, and then back to sculpting, a few times over the afternoon.
There is a break in the middle for tea and something to eat, and we close with a short reflection together. You do not need to watch the clock. The shape of the afternoon is built to carry you between stillness and making, without rushing.
No experience needed
This afternoon is for beginners and experienced practitioners alike. You do not need to be experienced in yoga, and you do not need to be an artist. Working with your hands is not a skill you bring to the day. It is part of the practice itself, part of becoming like clay. All you need is some curiosity and a willingness to slow down.

What is the idea behind combining yoga and clay?
Yoga settles the body and quiets the mind. From that settled place, working with clay becomes its own kind of practice. Touching and feeling the clay, letting a shape emerge without forcing it, is a way of becoming like clay yourself: soft, present, and open. That is the thread that runs through the afternoon.
Do I need to be good at art?
No. There is nothing to get right. The clay is there for you to explore, not to perform. Working with your hands is part of the practice, not a skill you need to arrive with.
I have never done yoga. Is that a problem?
Not at all. The practice is gentle and suitable for complete beginners, with options to adapt as you need.
What do I need to bring?
Please bring your own yoga mat. That is the one thing we ask you to bring, and the practice depends on it. Everything for the sculpting, the clay and all the tools, is provided.
Can I come on my own?
Yes. Most people will. It is a small and welcoming group of sixteen, and the afternoon is designed to be easy to join alone.
